The 4 People Who Should Know About Your Will

Your will should list alternative caretakers for your minor children in the event of death. However, simply executing a will is not enough. To avoid additional trauma, it makes sense that the people who look after your children everyday know about your desires. Here are four people and entities who need to your the plan for your children during an emergency.

 1. Your Children’s School

Your children’s school needs to know whom to release custody to in the event of your passing. Having the name of the alternative guardian on file will allow the school to take the precautions necessary to ensure the safety of your child in this difficult time.

2.  Your Children’s Babysitter

Your children’s babysitter should know what needs to happen in the event of an emergency. Providing them clear instructions on whom to contact can avoid confusion and will give them assurances on what needs to happen.

3.  Your Children’s Emergency Contact

Your children’s emergency contact may be the person in town you want contacted in the event of an emergency. However, it may not be the person whom you want to give legal custody of your children. Letting your emergency contact know allows them to take the steps needed in contacting the guardian.

 4. Your Named Guardian

This may seem self-explanatory, but you would be surprised by the number of guardians who had no clue they’ve been named as such  in someone’s will. Make sure they know what your desires are. More importantly, make sure they are willing to perform the duties as well. If they are unwilling, you may want to add an additional alternative guardian.
