Prepare Your Family for the Unexpected

Nobody expects their own death.

Even if people do, they rarely plan for it. Providing clarity for your family members ahead of time can make the process easier for them and ensure your desires are met. Here are three ways that you can help your family ahead of time get through one of the most difficult times in their lives.

 1. In Case of Emergency Packet

Every family should have an “In Case of Emergency” packet that outlines what needs to be done in the event of death or incapacitation. In this plan, there should be papers naming a substitute guardian for children as well as a copy of the most current will. More thought-out packets can also include checklists for executors as well as names and numbers of people to call such as the family attorney who can be of assistance in this time of need.

 2. Discuss with Family Beforehand

Leaving your family out of the loop can cause havoc in the event of an emergency. While it may not be legally binding, informing your family ahead of time can let them know where important documents are stored and can allow you to answer any questions. Revisiting the topic once a year, can ensure that everyone is up to date on the changing needs for the family if the situation calls for it.

 3. Plan Safety Net Funds

Placing responsible family members in control of non-probate assets can provide additional stability following your passing. Furthermore, this can avoid unnecessary desires for urgency in getting your estate administered. Having a safety-net account that is either payable on death or with survivorship rights can ensure that your family has the funds necessary to protect themselves from economic catastrophe if the primary income earner passes away.
